A practical Sunday meal prep routine that takes 90 minutes and makes weeknight dinners dramatically easier — without turning your kitchen into a full-time job.

Next 45 minutes: active cooking

Last 30 minutes: cool and pack

  • Pack proteins in one container, rice in another, sauce in a jar
  • Portion out ingredients for any specific meals that need it (e.g. pre-measured spice blends)

Label everything with the date and what it is. It sounds fussy, but when Wednesday evening is hectic, you want to open the fridge and instantly know what's what.

With this prep done, a typical weeknight dinner goes from 45 minutes to 15:

  • Monday bowl: reheat chicken + rice, add sauce or dressing, done
  • Tuesday quesadillas: shred the already-cooked chicken, build quesadilla, 10 minutes
  • Wednesday pasta: boil pasta (9 minutes), reheat sauce (3 minutes), done
  • Thursday soup: everything's already cooked, just combine and heat through

The mental load drops too. You open the fridge, you see the components, you know exactly what dinner is.

What to skip

Not everything is worth prepping in advance. Raw proteins are fine to cook the day of if you have 35 minutes. Salads don't keep well once dressed. And if you have a slow cooker, you can "prep" Thursday's dinner by dumping ingredients in the pot before you leave in the morning.

The goal is to prep things that make a real difference to weeknight speed — not to prep things just because you can.
